  1. Understand your target audience

What are their demographics for example, age, location, gender? What are their interests?  Are they on different-media channels? Does your audience have social media channels they prefer over the others? Most of the platforms have analytics tools which will provide insights for this.

Make sure these are in line with your business objectives. Be realistic you cannot expect to generate lots of sales initially from your social media activity. So, you may wish to start with objectives around brand awareness, growing audience and building relationships.

What platforms are they on? What content are they posting? Are your audience engaging with it? Are there any gaps or opportunities for your business? You can find out what your competition are doing by using social listening. Search on their name and relevant keywords and see what people are saying.

If you are already using social media to market your business review your current activity. What works for your business and what does not? Who is engaging with you and how does your social media activity compare with your competition?

  1. Establish accounts for social media channels

Even if you do not want to use them yet. Establish an account so no one else can claim it for you. Focus on the platforms that your audience are on and optimise these profiles.

  1. Create a social media content calendar

As well as having great content you need plan when you will share your content to maximise its effectiveness. Identify the best times for each platform and schedule them in the calendar. Include time to interact with your audience.

  1. Try to be creative

Look at your favourite brands on social media what are they doing? Maybe check out winners of social media awards as these brands will be doing innovative things. Find out what your target audience are talking about on line. Although you want to be original lots can be learnt from other people and then you can  develop your content based on this research.
