5 things businesses shouldn’t do on social media

If you are own your own business then social media is a great cost-effective way to promote your business, build your brand and engage with existing and potential clients. However, you need to aware of few things that could potentially cause a negative impact

1. Religion and politics

Many have strong views on both these subjects and there is no way you can know all your customers preferences. Rather than run the risk of alienating anyone do not post or comment on either of these topics.  Instead focus on your customers needs and issues and provide the solutions. Avoiding any upsets, loss of customers and possible damage to profit.

2. Negative material

The minute you post negative content customers will focus on that and not on your products or services. They could associate your business with negativity. Negative content turns customers off and they may even un-follow you. It seems basic however its surprising how some businesses fall into the trap. Post positive stimulating content to help take their mind off bad news.

3. Make sure it is actually social content

Social media platforms are not suitable for one-way conversational content. So, avoid posting mundane content like press releases, white papers and lecturers. So, share interesting information customers can engage with.  It’s likely they have already brought into your services and products. Aim to share something that gives insight into your company and its personality.

4. Don’t be repetitive

Don’t keep posting the same old thing people get fed up of hearing about the same subject. This is true from a personal aspect too. No one wants to see the same images of dog or cat or at the same time hear about how great your business is over and over. Mix things up, post about industry news and updates and things that will help improve their life’s. If you get your content right you include a soft sell which customers are more likely to engage with. Don’t tell them how good you are, share quality content. Let them make up their own mind and tell others how good you are.

5. Don’t over post

Each platform has a different protocol on the amount of posts per day. Its acceptable to post several times on twitter however Facebook is probably only one post per day. Research the best practice for frequency on different platforms and keep to them.  If you have a lot to say on one subject divide the content up and share over a period of time. That way it remains engaging and useful to the client. Plus, they are more likely to read good quality short pieces of content rather than long heavy content.
